What Skills Employers Are Looking for in Software Engineers — 2026

"Based on the roles we source for, here's what companies are actually asking for when they hire software engineers today."

What We're Seeing Across Our Hiring Requirements

We've sourced for software engineering roles across product companies, IT services, and startups in India. Here's what companies are consistently asking for.

1. Full-stack capability is increasingly expected

Even companies with separate front-end and back-end teams prefer engineers who understand both sides. You don't need to be equally strong at both, but you need to be comfortable reading, reviewing, and occasionally writing code on both layers.

2. Cloud-native is baseline for mid-senior roles

AWS or GCP experience isn't a bonus any more at 4+ years. Companies expect comfort with cloud deployments, IAM, storage, and basic infrastructure.

3. TypeScript over JavaScript for new projects

Most product companies have moved to TypeScript. If you haven't, start. The learning curve is manageable and the payoff is significant.

4. System design for 5+ years

If you have 5 or more years of experience, expect system design questions. Companies are specifically looking for engineers who can think beyond implementation and consider scale, failure modes, and trade-offs.

5. Communication and ownership

This comes up in almost every briefing we receive. Companies want engineers who own their work, communicate blockers early, and work proactively rather than waiting for instructions.

What's Less Relevant Than It Used to Be

  • Specific UI framework brand loyalty (React vs Vue vs Angular — most companies care more about your JavaScript depth)
  • Memorising algorithms you'll never use in a real job (still tested, but the bar is shifting toward practical problem solving)
